As many as 1 in 10 couples suffer from infertility.  This is defined as being unable to conceive a child after 12 months of properly timed intercourse.  When faced with infertility, many people turn to high-tech treatments such as artificial insemination or in vitro fertilization.  Such treatments are very expensive, and not every couple who wishes to have a child is willing, or able, to pay the prices charged by physicians offering such treatments.

Acupuncture is an effective treatment for couples with unexplained infertility, or for women who only ovulate sporadically.  It can be combined with other treatments, and studies have shown that women who receive acupuncture have a higher success rate with in vitro fertilization treatment than women who do not receive acupuncture.

It has been speculated by many practitioners that acupuncture works as a treatment for infertility by increasing blood flow to the reproductive organs.  Since acupuncture also reduces stress, this could be another reason for the success rates – as chronic stress can lead to infertility too.
