Baby Boomer Generation: It’s Time To Think About Retirement

April 22nd, 2008 Darlyn Posted in Retirement Planning No Comments »

Between 1940 and 1964, there was a massive increase in the birth rate.  People born in the 1940s and 1950s are often referred to as 'baby boomers'.  The baby boomer generation is getting older, and many of them are now around retirement age.  They have worked long and hard throughout their careers, and now hopefully have enough money to be able to go and enjoy their retirement years.  Retirement can be hard for many people, especially if they have worked in one job for a long time, and have made lots of friends amongst their colleagues, whom they are loathe to leave behind.

Leaving Your Career and Retiring

Retirement is quite a huge step, and can be a daunting one.  The best thing to do is simply pick a date, and, with an appropriate period of notice, inform your employer that you are retiring on that date.  It can be scary to leave the world of work behind, but do you really want to keep working for the rest of your life?  After working for so many years, you deserve to spend the rest of your days the way you want to – doing whatever you want, and going wherever you want, instead of working for someone else. Canada Retirement Planning Experiences

April 8th, 2008 admin Posted in Retirement Planning No Comments »

EDITOR'S NOTE:

A friend of ours who lives within minutes of the Canadian border in Upstate New York shared his experience about how Canadians do their retirement planning.  For many Canadians, retirement planning seems to revolve around traveling the United States according to him.  He shared these basic rules for retirement planning.  Here are his thoughts!

It’s Called A Line, You Stand In It

It seems many retirees – Canadian ones, at least – have never had to queue in their lives before.  Please, when you come to the USA, learn to queue – you can not go in front of me – being retired does not mean that you can jump the queue, and I don't care that you fought side by side with our troops in Korea – you still have to queue! Tips For Canadian Retirement Planning

March 27th, 2008 admin Posted in Retirement Planning No Comments »

Planning for your retirement is one of the most important things you will do in your career.  No matter where you live in the world it is important to secure your future.  Each country has their own little considerations, and this article looks at important things to consider if you live in Canada and are planning for your retirement.

Pension Plans In Canada

The Canada Pension Plan, or CPP is a stable and dependable pension that you can build on in the run up to your retirement, it is the cornerstone of a typical Canadian retirement plan.

The CPP is an earnings related social insurance program that you contribute to during your working life.  The scheme offers protection to the contributor and their family in the event of loss of income due to retirement, disability, or death.      The CPP offers disability, retirement, and survivor benefits as part of the scheme. Basic Retirement Calculators: How Do They Work?

February 25th, 2008 Darlyn Posted in Retirement Planning No Comments »

For those of  you who may not know, a  basic retirement calculator is a program you can find for free on the internet.  The program takes your current retirement savings information, lets you factor in things that will affect the final number, and then tells you how much more you need to save to be able to retire at the level you want to retire at.  Sound pretty helpful, doesn't it?  And above all, it's FREE!

Unfortunately though, many people do not understand what a basic retirement calculator is telling them.  More importantly,  they do not understand how it gets the numbers it spews back out at them.  A basic retirement calculator is a guessing machine that takes current conditions, puts a huge guess for future trends on the current conditions, and then it tells you what kinds of savings you will need in order to retire comfortably. Sometime the figure can be shocking and you may conclude that you may never  be able to retire. Read the rest of this entry »

Tips For Career Planning Retirement

February 18th, 2008 Darlyn Posted in Retirement Planning No Comments »

The most important aspect in getting ready for retirement is to make sure you are doing proper retirement planning.  Effective retirement planning  involves thought and commitment.   You will need to put both thought and commitment into planning how you will generate income and a comfortable lifestyle during the years after you leave the workforce.  Needless to say retirement years are one of the most important times in anyone’s life.   If you wait until you actually reach your  retirement years to start planning, it is going to be too late to get yourself prepared and ready.  The earlier you can start the better, even if it is as early as when you are in your thirties.

Starting with your retirement planning early means that you will be better able to save and put away more money for your retirement years. Even if all this money does not come from your place of employment, for instance if you put a few dollars of your own money away here and there on the side, it will really add up in the end and will become a stable source of income once the day of retirement finally does come.

A Guide To Career Planning Retirement

What is career planning retirement? This refers to the process in which you decide on a career that is going to offer you satisfactory retirement benefits. Really, career planning is an ongoing lifelong process that allows you to change your career direction as circumstances in your life change, retirement or otherwise.

Regardless of whether you are just beginning to think about the type of career that you want, whether you have lost your job due to downsizing or restructuring, or whether you are considering leaving your present job for another, career planning is often an important aspect in everyone’s life.  Even more so, when you consider the effects it can have on your retirement planning. How to Get Ready for Early Retirement

January 4th, 2008 Darlyn Posted in Retirement Planning No Comments »

Nowadays many people are considering early retirement, including me.  Early retirement is becoming more and more popular, but it does not just happen overnight.  It takes  a lot of planning.  If you think that just putting a little money away every month is enough of a plan for early retirement, then think again.  Nothing could  farther from the truth.

When you want to retire earlier (e.g. at age 45), you actually need to save more money than if the you plan to retire later in life (e.g. at age 60).  Actually, you may  need to save twice as much!  You take a hot and miss approach to your retirement planning.  Something as important as an early retirement needs to be planned properly and in detail if you want to avoid coming up short on money and having to return to your (former) job.

The first step to planning for early retirement is to take note of when you want to retire, exactly, and what you want your retirement to look like. Try to be realistic. If you want to live in a mansion and drink umbrella drinks by the pool you better have the income to do it right now, or else you can probably shoot a little lower.
